Born in Luzern (CH) in 1987, he started piano lessons at age 6. He grew up in a musical family active in the Swiss folk-music scene which urged him to start playing and exploring this music at an early age. Today Gernet is a prominent figure in the Swiss folk scene as a member of the Ländler band Gläuffig, with which he has had numerous live television dates on SRF (Swiss radio and TV). In spring 2017, he composed a piece for the carillon at Haus Ruckli on Bahnhofstrasse in Lucerne. The melody can be heard four times a day Mon-Sat 2:00 pm / 3:00 pm / 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

Gernet studied Jazz at Hochschule Luzern - Musik under Hans Feigenwinter, Chris Wiesendanger and Christoph Baumann (Master of Arts in Music Performance) and at Hochschule der Künste Bern under Colin Vallon and Bert Joris (Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy). In 2012 he lived and worked in Vienna for one year. His extracurricular studies include lessons with Aaron Goldberg, Larry Goldings, Peter Madsen, and Greg Osby. In 2023 he graduated in music theory at Hochschule Luzern - Musik (MAS in music theory).

Gernet has performed and toured in whole Europe, Brazil, Australia, Canada, Colombia and spent time living and working in Vienna. He has appeared with: Nathanael Su, Roberto Bossard New Group, Claudio Puntin, Swiss Army Big Band, Niels Rosendahl (AU), Dani Häusler, Carlo Brunner, and Gläuffig.
